A new trend in cosmetic surgery offers moms opportunity to regain their pre-baby bodies by having plastic surgery after their pregnancy. The “mommy makeover,” a trifecta of surgeries , is gaining popularity nationwide.
A mommy makeover often includes breast lift or breast implants, liposuction and a tummy tuck. Last year , doctors across the nation performed more than 325,000 mommy makeover procedures on moms between 20 and 40 years of age, a boost of 11% compared to 2005, according to data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Oklahoma Plastic surgeon, Dr. Juan Brou, whose plastic surgery center is based in Oklahoma City, said he has also seen a rise in moms looking for these mommy makeovers types of procedures.
“Weight gain during pregnancy will often put fat deposits in the wrong areas ,” Brou said. “Someone can work and exercise very hard and these deposits still don’t go away. Some people just can’t shake it off.”
Many moms turn to liposuction to take away these fatty areas. Breast lifts and implants are also popular post-baby plastic surgery procedures, Brou said.
“Even if women don’t breast feed, the breasts can still loose substance and volume,” Brou said. “Many women want their breast restored to their original volume and look.”
Tummy tucks are another cosmetic surgery procedure that is common and can eliminate stretch marks and diastasis. Diastasis occurs when a woman’s muscles in her abdomen become separated, which sometimes happens with women who carry larger babies. This condition leaves a woman with a lower tummy that cannot be exercised away.
Brou pointed out that it is important for women considering having a mommy makeover to be certain they don’t intend to get pregnant again.
“I always tell the patient that if you want to have more kids to have them before the surgery,” Brou said. “Most commonly, patients came to see me after they’ve had about three children and are pleased with their family's size.”
